Ingredients

  • spirit

A barrel-aged American whiskey distilled mostly from corn. Sweet, oaky, with notes of vanilla and caramel.

  • syrup

Made from raw cane sugar. Richer and more molasses-forward than simple syrup.

  • bitters

The classic gentian-based aromatic bitters. A few dashes deepen everything.

Method

  1. Add demerara syrup and bitters to a rocks glass.

  2. Add bourbon and one large ice cube.

  3. Stir gently for 20 seconds to chill and dilute.

Resist the urge to overstir. The dilution should be subtle.

  4. Express orange peel oils over the surface, drop in.

Garnish

  • Orange Peel

About this drink

The original cocktail — defined by the 1806 newspaper that gave the form its name. Build it in the glass and stir slowly over a single big rock.
